This 4-week skill-based course is designed to enhance your wheel throwing practice by introducing valuable handbuilding techniques. Learn how to address common wheel throwing issues like thin-bottomed pieces and chunky forms. Discover methods for throwing larger vessels, creating plates, and handbuilding handles all with ease. This class will equip you with the confidence and skills to take your wheel thrown pottery to the next level!

All completed pieces will be bisque fired, and you can choose to have them glazed and fired on-site for an extra cost. To gain a better understanding of your wheel throwing style and how handbuilding can help, be prepared to cut through a few of your pieces to evaluate their thickness and shape.

*prerequisite: Recent wheel throwing experience is necessary – within the last year.

Melissa Fiskaldo

Melissa Fiskaldo is a ceramic artist and educator based in Plano, Texas, with roots in Pennsylvania where clay has been her passion since childhood. With nearly 2 decades of experience in wheel throwing and hand building, her pieces celebrate the simple beauty of everyday moments, transforming ordinary objects into cherished vessels that foster connection with others and within ourselves. Her studio is located at FCS Clayworks in the Garland, Texas where she is a resident artist and instructor. With a bachelor’s in Art Education and 15 years of teaching ceramics, Melissa is dedicated to cultivating a supportive and inspiring learning environment where students of all levels can explore their creativity and find joy in the pottery process. Life is stressful enough, let’s laugh and create more often together!
