Prerequisite: Must have basic throwing skill.

Now that you’ve conquered the basics on the wheel, let’s make it more interesting and make the crackle surface intentional. There’s 3 weeks of throwing and using sodium silicate. The 4th week of the class we will be glazing our works of art.

Projects: Up to 5 vessels (vases) and 2 cups or mugs.

What to bring first three weeks of class: 6-10# of clay and heat gun or hand-held propane torch each week. Basic throwing, trimming tools, and paint brushes will be available or bring your own.
Sodium silicate, underglazes, cone 6 glazes and firings are included.

We’ll contact you when the pieces are fired and ready for pickup.

Instructor Bio

Kay Bernier

Kay has a collective 30+ years of experience in ceramics and has been teaching for 12. She has always been a maker and enjoys the thoughtfulness ceramics requires of her. She enjoys finding new forms and functionalities to explore. Her practice hones in on the design and function of a piece, and is then defined by the iterative process of making and remaking until the design, form and function all fit together to make a piece complete. She has taught all over the Dallas area in studios and privately since 2011.
