Raku and Alternative Firings
FCS Clayworks is excited to announce a new roster of raku and alternative firing workshops and events. These firings will be facilitated outdoors in the Masonic Lodge parking lot across from the studio. The studio will use two barrel-style fiber kilns to facilitate everyone’s work. We will be exploring various techniques from class to class, ranging from obvara & naked raku to more traditional glazed raku, horsehair and saggar firing.
Ticket price includes the cost of up to 2 pieces* per person. Max dimension 6″x6″x6 or 216 cubic inches.
If they do not have any bisqued pots, participants may adopt one piece of abandoned bisqueware from the studio boneyard to participate in the fun. Shelf width in raku kiln is 15″.
Community Raku firing: Studio will provide glazes. Bring an 08-04 bisque pot to glaze and fire with us. Participants are also welcome to use their own raku-specific glazes. All glazes used must be specifically suitable for raku.
Obvara and Naked Raku: Class will cover Baltic Raku (AKA Obvara) and naked raku (using slips and glaze to cover pot before firing). Students may also choose to treat their surfaces with horsehair/feathers instead.
*Please email erin@fcsclayworks.com if you have a large or oddly sized work to fire. We will get it figured out!
