This class will focus on slab techniques and surface design. In this beginner-friendly workshop, students will craft a handbuilt plate incorporating Japanese Notan design into the build. Students will craft their own templates and, through guided step-by-step instruction, they will cut and shape pre-rolled slabs of clay to form a plate or platter, then slip and score the seams for a clean, finished work.

You’ll learn how to:

– Create and use a template for your design
– Cut and form organic slab-built forms
– Use basic joining and shaping techniques for clean construction

All materials are provided, including pre-rolled clay slabs, materials for making design templates, scissors, and basic tools. At the end of the session, you’ll choose a studio glaze for your piece, which will be applied after bisque firing. Your finished plate will be ready for pickup after the final firing. This workshop is perfect for people new to clay or anyone looking to explore handbuilding in a fun, new way.
