Join Professor Youssef El Berrichi for this immersive Zellige tile mosaic workshop at FCS Clayworks. Youssef is a Professor of Language and Cultural studies from The Roots Academy in Morocco. Roots Academy is a language and intercultural center dedicated to teaching foreign languages and spreading cultural depth through artistic expression and the sharing of languages. In Morocco, where the Alas Mountains and coastal town of Safi hold stories of ancient traditions and ceramic artistry, mosaic becomes a vessel for preserving narratives and honoring the beauty of the world around us.

Beyond mere craft, Zellige tile and mosaic is a profound link to the diverse history woven into the fabric of the land. From the Atlas Mountains’ rugged landscapes, where Berber traditions echo, to Safi’s coastal beauty, renowned for its ceramic heritage, the tiles become a metaphor for the cultural mosaic we all are a part of.

In this workshop, Youssef will guide students in making a small Zellige tile mosaic of their own. Youssef will also speak on the rich history and processes that go into making individual tiles and how those tiles come together like beautiful puzzle pieces to create unique mosaics.

The studio will also be serving Moroccan tea for our guests as we all enjoy the rich cultural traditions of a this colorful and inspiring land.
